A Mother's Day Tribute to My Mother

There is a saying in Kashmiri which goes something like this: Mum and I were born first, then Dad, and a few days later Grandpa. The point being that a baby’s first contact in this world is with the mother. For Mother’s Day (May 10), I would like to pay tribute to the first woman in my own life, ie. my mother. She gave me life and nourished me through my tender years, taught me my most cherished values and helped me grow into a strong, independent woman. Rather like herself. Now 83, my mother continues to be a loving presence in my life. She remains beautiful and fun-loving, stubborn and kind. And she retains a quality I can only describe as “motherliness.”
